History of Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan’s story is associated with the Hindu epic Mahabharata. In Mahabharata, when Lord Krishna cut his finger accidentally, Draupadi tore a piece of cloth from her saree and tied it to her brother’s finger to stop the bleeding.

Considering the cloth she tied on Krishna’s finger as a sacred thread, Lord Krishna promised to protect her from the evil all his life. Even when Kauravas wanted to disrobe Draupadi – after humiliating her by dragging her to court, pulling her hair, and manhandling her – Krishna provided immeasurable cloth reams to keep her covered to salvage her dignity.

After that, the act of Draupadi’s tying a piece of cloth on Krishna’s wounded finger became synonymous with Raksha Bandhan. Later, all the Indian girls started tying rakhi on their brother’s wrists and they promised to protect them just like Krishna protected Draupadi.
